Apollo 12 struck by lightning twice
On November 14, 1969, Commander Pete Conrad, Command Module Pilot Richard Gordon, and Lunar Module Pilot Alan Bean strapped into their Saturn V. The sky above Cape Canaveral was overcast and drizzly. Meteorologists had warned that a cold front was moving through, and the launch window was tight. NASA decided to go for it. It was a gamble that nearly cost three lives.
Thirty-six seconds after liftoff, at an altitude of about 6,400 feet, the Saturn V triggered a lightning strike. The bolt traveled from the launch pad up through the vehicle’s exhaust plume and hit the spacecraft. The electrical surge knocked out the fuel cells—the spacecraft’s main power source. In the command module, warning lights went haywire. The guidance platform, which told the astronauts their orientation in space, went completely dead. Conrad later described it as looking like a “Christmas tree” of red alarms.
Thirty seconds later, a second lightning strike hit the vehicle. This one was even more violent. The crew saw a bright flash through the windows and heard a loud crack. In Mission Control, the telemetry screen went blank. Flight Director Gerry Griffin later admitted he thought the vehicle had exploded. For a few agonizing seconds, no one knew if Conrad, Gordon, and Bean were alive.
But here’s where the Apollo program’s no-nonsense training kicked in. Conrad, a former test pilot with nerves of steel, didn’t panic. He saw the fuel cells were offline and ordered Gordon to reset them. The backup systems worked. Within minutes, the guidance platform was realigned, the fuel cells came back online, and the telemetry flickered to life. Mission Control held its breath. The mission was still go.
Now, most people would assume a double lightning strike would abort the mission. But Conrad knew the flight rules. If the Saturn V was still performing, and the spacecraft systems were stable, there was no reason to turn back. NASA’s engineers spent the next hour analyzing data and concluded the vehicle was sound. The decision was made: continue to the Moon.
Apollo 12 didn’t just survive the lightning; it went on to execute one of the most precise landings in the Apollo program. Conrad and Bean set the Lunar Module Intrepid down within walking distance of the Surveyor 3 probe, an unmanned spacecraft that had landed two years earlier. The accuracy was stunning. Conrad later joked that if he’d overshot by a few feet, he might have landed on the probe itself. The crew spent two moonwalks collecting samples, taking photos, and cutting pieces off Surveyor 3 to bring back for analysis. It was a textbook mission—except for the part where they got hit by bolts of electricity from the sky.
The lightning incident changed NASA’s launch procedures forever. Today, there are strict weather rules for manned launches, including a ban on launching within a certain distance of thunderclouds. The Apollo 12 crew had inadvertently become a test case for how robust the Saturn V and the Apollo spacecraft really were. They took a direct hit to the electrical system and still had enough redundancy to complete a lunar landing.
For the casual space fan, Apollo 12 is often overshadowed by Apollo 11’s first steps and Apollo 13’s drama. But there’s something raw about a mission that almost died in the first minute and then delivered a perfect landing on another world. It reminds you that spaceflight is never safe, only managed risk. Conrad, Gordon, and Bean didn’t ask for a break. They fixed the problem, checked the data, and kept flying. That’s what real space exploration looks like.
