Lunar Gateway and the small station concept
The Gateway is not a replacement for the ISS. It’s a fraction of the size—a small outpost that will orbit the Moon, not sit on its surface. Think of it as a base camp for lunar exploration, a place where astronauts can live and work for short stints before heading down to the surface or back to Earth. The station will be built in pieces, launched on SpaceX’s Starship or the Space Launch System, depending on the phase. The core modules are the Power and Propulsion Element, built by Maxar, and the Habitation and Logistics Outpost, led by Northrop Grumman. Together, these will provide power, propulsion, and living space for up to four crew members for about a month at a time.
Why build something so small? Because the mission profile is different. The ISS was designed for long-duration microgravity research. The Gateway is designed for short-duration lunar operations. It’s not meant to be a permanent home. It’s a waypoint. Astronauts will launch from Earth on a multi-day journey, dock at the Gateway, and then use a separate lander to go down to the Moon’s south pole. The Gateway itself serves as a staging area—a place to swap out crews, refuel landers, and store supplies. There’s no need for a sprawling complex when your crew is only there for a few weeks at a time.
The missions that matter here are the ones that get the Gateway built and then used. The first big milestone is Artemis IV, currently targeted for 2028. That mission will deliver the first two modules to lunar orbit and dock them together. That’s when the Gateway becomes a real station, even if it’s just a skeleton. The next crewed mission, Artemis V, will actually send astronauts to the Gateway for the first time, where they’ll live and work for about a month. That’s the first real proof-of-concept for the small station approach.
But here’s the part that should get your attention: the Gateway isn’t just about the Moon. It’s a test bed for deep space missions. Mars is the long-term goal, and the Gateway will help NASA figure out how to keep crews alive and healthy during long trips away from Earth. Radiation shielding, closed-loop life support, propulsion systems—these are all things that get tested on the Gateway before anyone commits to a three-year Mars mission. The small station concept works because it’s low-cost and low-risk compared to building another ISS. If something fails, you don’t lose a billion-dollar habitat full of irreplaceable experiments. You lose a small module that can be replaced or redesigned for the next iteration.
There’s also the commercial angle. NASA is intentionally leaving room for private companies to dock their own modules and habitats at the Gateway. That’s a big shift from the ISS, where government agencies owned almost everything. Companies like Axiom Space and Blue Origin are already looking at adding their own commercial modules to the Gateway, either for research or for tourism. If that plays out, the small station could eventually grow into a more diverse hub, with government astronauts and private customers sharing the same orbital space. That’s a future worth watching.
The skeptics will tell you the Gateway is unnecessary, that we should just go straight to the surface. And they have a point—if your only goal is planting a flag, you don’t need a station. But NASA’s goal is sustainable presence, not a repeat of Apollo. A small station in lunar orbit gives you a place to wait out bad weather, a place to send supplies ahead of time, and a place to abort if something goes wrong on the surface. It’s the difference between a road trip with a rest stop and a road trip with no gas stations. You can make it without, but it’s smarter not to try.
The Lunar Gateway is not flashy. It doesn’t have the size or the glamour of the ISS. But it represents a shift in how we do space exploration—smaller, modular, and focused on the missions that matter.
