If you’re a casual space enthusiast who wants to get more out of watching a Vandenberg launch, the best move is to plan around the closures. Check the schedule at least a week in advance. If a launch is happening during prime surf hours, pick a different break for that day. Better yet, drive to Jalama Beach or Refugio State Beach, which are outside the danger zone and often offer clear sightlines of the rocket climbing through the marine layer. And if you do get caught at the gate on launch day, don’t get annoyed. Get curious. That closure is proof that someone took the safety side seriously. It’s also proof that Vandenberg is still doing what it does best: throwing heavy metal into polar orbit while the waves roll in empty below.
