United Launch Alliance is a joint venture between Boeing and Lockheed Martin, companies that built the rockets that took America to Mars and put the Space Shuttle into orbit. ULA’s previous workhorse, the Atlas V, relied on Russian-made RD-180 engines for its first stage. That was fine until geopolitics got messy. After Russia invaded Ukraine, the pressure to ditch Russian hardware became impossible to ignore. Vulcan Centaur was already in development as the replacement, but the urgency shot through the roof. But where New Glenn is still testing, Vulcan is already flying. The BE-4 burns liquid oxygen and liquified natural gas, which is cleaner and denser than kerosene-based fuels. This gives Vulcan better performance for heavy payloads while keeping costs manageable. The upper stage is the Centaur V, a beefed-up version of the legendary Centaur upper stage that has been sending probes to the outer solar system for decades. Together, these stages produce a launch vehicle that can lift up to 27 metric tons to low Earth orbit. That’s not Starship numbers, but it’s more than enough for 95 percent of the missions that matter.
Now let’s talk reliability. ULA has never had a single failure on a mission with humans, satellites, or national security payloads. Vulcan Centaur extended that perfect record on its first few launches. The first flight in January 2024 carried Astrobotic’s Peregrine lunar lander. That mission didn’t go perfectly for the lander due to a propulsion leak, but Vulcan Centaur performed flawlessly. The second flight in October 2024 launched a dummy payload to test systems for future national security missions. Again, no issues. By early 2025, Vulcan Centaur was earning certifications from the Space Force to launch the highest-priority U.S. military satellites. Those are the payloads you never hear about in the news, but they’re the ones that guide missiles, secure communications, and keep the country safe. ULA doesn’t brag about them. They just deliver.
The quiet confidence extends to the launch rate. ULA isn’t trying to launch every week like SpaceX. They don’t need to. Vulcan Centaur is designed for high-value, high-assurance missions where failure is not an option. Each launch costs around $110 million, which isn’t cheap, but it’s competitive for the segment. When your cargo is a $500 million spy satellite or a one-of-a-kind planetary probe, you pay for the peace of mind that comes with a nearly unblemished record. The rocket also incorporates advanced systems like autonomous flight termination, which allows it to self-destruct if it veers off course without needing a human to push the button. That’s a quiet upgrade that makes range operations faster and safer.
What about the future? Vulcan Centaur has a solid contract backlog through the 2030s. ULA plans to ramp up to about six to eight launches per year, which might sound slow next to Starship’s ambitions, but it’s consistent and profitable. The company also designed the rocket to be upgraded over time. The first stage could eventually be reused. Blue Origin is already working on recovering BE-4 engines for later flights. That would bring costs down even more. And while Bezos and Musk fight it out over who has the bigger rocket, ULA will keep quietly sending up satellites that actually make the modern world possible.
