You know the drill. Every few months, some billionaire or space agency rolls out a new plan for Mars. Elon Musk talks about Starship landing on the red dirt. NASA pours billions into Perseverance and sample return. Hollywood makes another movie where astronauts dig bases into Martian caves. Meanwhile, Venus sits right there, closer to Earth, almost identical in size, and nobody gives a damn. It’s the forgotten twin, and it’s time to ask why.

The short answer is that Mars looks like a place you could actually live. Venus looks like a place a demon would run away from. That’s not entirely fair, but it shapes every decision about where we spend our tourist dollars and rocket fuel. Let’s break it down.

First, the surface conditions. Mars has a thin atmosphere, sure, but it’s mostly carbon dioxide with some dust. Temperatures at the equator can hit a balmy 70 degrees Fahrenheit in summer, though they plunge to minus 100 at night. You need a pressurized suit and a heater, but you can theoretically walk around. Venus, by contrast, has a surface pressure 92 times Earth’s—equivalent to being 3,000 feet underwater. The average temperature is 867 degrees Fahrenheit, hot enough to melt lead. The atmosphere is sulfuric acid clouds that rain, not water, but corrosive acid. Your spacecraft would be crushed, roasted, and dissolved before you finished your first selfie. That’s a tough sell for a vacation brochure.

But here’s where it gets interesting for casual space fans who want destinations. The problem isn’t that Venus is uninteresting. It’s that the interesting parts are hostile to our human bodies and our machines. Mars, for all its cold and dust, offers a surface we can theoretically terraform. You can imagine a dome city. You can imagine growing potatoes in Martian soil. Venus offers nothing on the ground except a quick funeral.

The real destination, however, might not be the surface at all. Around thirty miles up, Venus’s atmosphere is almost Earth-like in pressure and temperature. The air is thick enough that you could breathe it—well, not breathe it, since it’s mostly CO2, but you could walk around in a pressurized suit without needing a heavy exoskeleton. The gravity is 90 percent of Earth’s, so your muscles and bones won’t waste away like they would on Mars. This has led scientists to propose cloud cities, floating platforms that drift through Venus’s upper atmosphere, harvesting solar power from the perpetual cloud cover and using local air for buoyancy. It sounds like science fiction, but it’s real engineering.

So why don’t we hear about Venus cloud cities in the news? Because the tech is harder. Mars landing is a known quantity, even if it’s dangerous. Our rovers have been bouncing and parachuting onto the red planet for decades. Venus landing is a nightmare. Soviet probes survived about two hours on the surface before they melted. A floating base requires materials that don’t corrode in sulfuric acid, power systems that work in dim sunlight, and communication relays that can punch through thick clouds. It’s doable, but it’s not a weekend project.

Another reason Venus gets ignored is timeline. Mars feels urgent. The last decade has seen orbital refueling concepts, methane engines, and private companies pushing for crewed missions by the 2030s. Venus has no such momentum. NASA’s VERITAS and DAVINCI missions are launching in the early 2030s to map the surface and sniff the atmosphere, but those are robotic orbiters and probes. No one is seriously planning a human Venus mission until at least the 2040s, and even then it’s a research outpost, not a settlement.

There’s also a cultural bias. Mars is the frontier. It’s the rugged, masculine, John Carter fantasy. Venus, in old pulp sci-fi, was a jungle planet, a swampy greenhouse full of dinosaurs and cave women. That image stuck, but it’s wrong. Venus is a hellscape, not a paradise. The name itself sounds soft and romantic. Mars sounds like war and conquest. Men in their twenties want to conquer something, and Mars offers that narrative.

Still, as a destination, Venus has one massive advantage Mars lacks: proximity. A Venus flyby takes about four to six months, similar to Mars, but the launch windows are more frequent. You could theoretically send a crew to orbit Venus, drop a cloud base module, and return in under two years. That’s less radiation exposure, less bone loss, and less mental strain than a Mars round trip that takes three years. For a first off-world colony, Venus’s upper atmosphere might actually be safer than Mars’s surface, assuming we solve the acid problem.

The bottom line is that Venus is the forgotten twin because it looks like a dead end. But if you’re willing to look up instead of down, it’s the most habitable planet in the solar system besides Earth. The challenge is not reaching Venus. It’s convincing the world that a floating city in acid clouds is worth the trouble. For now, Mars gets the glory. But the next time you hear someone talk about colonizing the red planet, remember that the real prize might be floating thirty miles above the yellow one.
