It’s been circling Earth for years at a time, sometimes changing orbit without warning. The X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle is real, it’s classified, and it’s the single most telling example of how the Space Force is quietly reshaping the warfighting domain. But what does it actually do up there? Forget the conspiracy theories—here’s the grounded, no-nonsense reality.

First, understand what the X-37B is not. It’s not a weapon that drops bombs from space. It’s not a spy satellite in the traditional sense, though it could certainly carry sensors. What it is, is a reusable, unmanned test bed roughly a quarter the size of the old Space Shuttle, with a payload bay about the size of a pickup truck bed. The Space Force currently flies two of them, and as of 2024, the sixth mission (OTV-6) spent a record 908 days in orbit before landing at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. That’s two and a half years of operating in the most unforgiving environment humans have ever engineered for.

The straightforward answer about its job is that the X-37B exists to test new space technologies—specifically, technologies that the military wants to validate without committing to a full satellite program. But the interesting part, the part that keeps the Space Force busy, is how it does that. The vehicle can change its orbital inclination and altitude on the fly, a capability called “orbital maneuverability.” This is a big deal because most satellites are stuck in one orbital path. If you know a satellite’s orbit, you can predict where it will be at any minute. The X-37B breaks that predictability. It can dip lower into the atmosphere to shed speed, then boost back up, making it exceptionally hard to track. For a military that relies on space for navigation, communication, and missile warning, having a platform that can operate unpredictably is like having a submarine that can suddenly change its depth and heading.

During OTV-6, the Space Force publicly acknowledged that the X-37B was testing a “thermal management system” called the “Space Technology Advanced Research” module—basically, a way to radiate heat more efficiently in vacuum. That might sound boring, but consider the context. Any future space combat vehicle, or any persistent orbital platform meant to loiter for years, needs to manage heat from electronics, weapons, or propulsion without melting itself. The X-37B is the test mule for that future. It also deployed the FalconSat-8, a small satellite built by the Air Force Academy that carried experimental propulsion and communications gear. So the X-37B acts as a space truck: it carries experiments, deploys them, observes them, and then returns them to Earth for analysis. No other vehicle in the world can do that. You can’t bring back the payload of a standard satellite. The X-37B lands on a runway, gets rolled into a hangar, and technicians pick apart exactly what worked and what didn’t.

Now, here’s where the “agencies” angle comes in sharpest. The X-37B is a showcase of inter-agency collaboration, but not in the friendly, cooperative way you might imagine. The Space Force runs the program, but the development and manufacturing fall under the Air Force Rapid Capabilities Office. The launch services are contracted to SpaceX or United Launch Alliance—private companies. The payloads come from NASA, the Air Force Research Laboratory, and the Naval Research Laboratory. Each of these agencies has its own agenda. NASA wants to study how materials degrade in long-duration spaceflight. The Navy wants to test solar power beaming. The Space Force wants to see if it can operate a reusable vehicle in contested environments. The X-37B is the one physical asset that forces these different bureaucratic cultures to cooperate, share data, and prioritize missions. It’s a rare example of the U.S. government actually harmonizing its space research efforts, even if nobody on the outside knows the full details.

What does this mean for you, the casual space enthusiast? It means the Space Force is not just about satellite protection or space debris tracking. It’s about building a persistent, reusable, and unpredictable presence in orbit. The X-37B is the proof of concept. Every mission validates that the military can put a classified payload into orbit, leave it there for years, change its orbit at will, and bring it home. That capability is the foundation for everything from orbital refueling depots to space tugs to, yes, vehicles that could approach and inspect—or disable—an adversary’s satellite. The X-37B doesn’t look like a weapon. But it represents the logic of military space: control of the high ground requires being able to show up, stay, and move on your terms.

In a world where Russia and China are testing anti-satellite missiles and co-orbital interceptors, the X-37B is the American answer that doesn’t need to launch a kinetic warhead. It’s a silent, adaptable, reusable platform that can host any sensor, any experiment, any future system. The Space Force may never tell you exactly what OTV-7 is carrying. But you can bet it’s not just testing heat pipes. It’s testing the future of warfare in orbit, one classified orbit change at a time.
