Baikonur launch traditions and superstitions
Let’s start with the most famous tradition: the bus stop pee. Before every crewed Soyuz launch, the two backup cosmonauts and the three prime crew members are bussed to the launch pad. The bus stops at a specific spot on the road. The men get out, walk to the right rear tire, and urinate on it. This started back in the 1960s after Gagarin did it on the way to his historic flight. If you ask a cosmonaut why, he’ll shrug. It’s just what you do. Skipping it is bad luck. No one has ever tested what happens if you skip it, and no one wants to be the first.
Once they reach the pad, the crew does not wave goodbye. Instead, they stand at the base of the rocket and salute. This is a direct nod to Gagarin, who saluted the technicians before climbing aboard. Since then, every crew has done the same. But the superstitions don’t stop at the door. The crew is forbidden from watching the rocket being rolled out to the pad the night before. That sight is considered an omen of failure. They are also forbidden from saying the word “goodbye” to each other or to ground crew. “Goodbye” implies finality. Instead, they say “do svidaniya,” which means “until we meet again.”
The rocket itself has its own set of rules. The R-7 family, which includes the modern Soyuz-2, is a design so old that its launch procedure feels like a ritual in itself. The technicians place a coin under the rocket’s tail before the first stage is mated. This is said to guarantee a stable flight. The coin is usually a ruble, but in recent years, crews have accepted euros and dollars. The point is the metal, not the currency. The rocket also receives a blessing from an Orthodox priest before launch. This is a relatively recent addition—post-Soviet, when the state stopped enforcing atheism—but today it’s universal. The priest sprinkles holy water on the booster. The cosmonauts kiss the icon of St. Nicholas, the patron saint of travelers.
Then there is the day-of-launch routine. The crew eats a specific breakfast: scrambled eggs, a slice of lemon, and a cup of black tea. No coffee. No juice. No meat. This is not about nutrition. It’s about consistency. The same breakfast has been eaten before every successful launch since the 1960s. If the eggs are overcooked, the launch might still happen, but the crew will not be happy about it. They also watch the 1969 film “White Sun of the Desert” the night before. This has been mandatory for every crew since a 1971 tradition started. If they don’t watch it, the launch is delayed. This is not a suggestion. It is a rule.
The most telling superstition involves the name of the rocket itself. For decades, the R-7 was never called “Soyuz” before launch. Technicians and cosmonauts referred to it as “the product.” Saying the name out loud before flight was considered tempting fate. Only after successful orbit insertion did anyone dare to use the proper designation. This is still practiced informally today. You will hear mission control call it “the vehicle” or simply “the booster” until it reaches orbit.
None of this should be dismissed as primitive belief. The men launching these rockets grew up in a system where one mistake could kill the crew and end a career. The Soviet space program was brutally unforgiving of failure. The traditions exist because they reduce cognitive load. When you do the same thing every time, you eliminate variables. The coin, the pee, the blessing, the breakfast—these are not magic. They are mental anchors. They tell the crew that this flight is the same as all the successful flights that came before it. The steel may be old, but the discipline is new every day.
The R-7 is Soviet steel that still flies not because it is perfect, but because the people who fly it refuse to let randomness win. They control what they can control. And when that control meets a 1960s rocket and a 21st-century crew, you get a launch that feels anything but routine. It feels like a continuation of a long, strange, and superstitious line that began when a man named Gagarin stepped off a bus, urinated on a tire, and changed history.
