The term “Grabby Aliens” comes from a 2021 paper by astrophysicists Robin Hanson, Charles Stross, and others. It describes a specific type of intelligent civilization—one that grows rapidly, consumes resources, and doesn’t stop. Think of it less like a peaceful interstellar federation and more like a fungus that spreads across a petri dish. These civilizations expand outward at a constant, near-light-speed pace, converting every star system they encounter into their own infrastructure, habitats, or computational matter. They’re not necessarily hostile in a military sense; they’re just indifferent to anything in their path. From our perspective, they might as well be grabbing everything they can reach.
So why haven’t we seen any evidence of them? Because in a universe that’s about 13.8 billion years old, the timing of when a civilization like this begins its expansion matters enormously. Most civilizations in our galaxy might have emerged recently—within the last few hundred million years. If a Grabby civilization started expanding even a million years ago, the leading edge of its expansion would already be hundreds of light-years wide. In deep space, that’s nothing. Across the Milky Way’s 100,000-light-year diameter, a late-starting grabby civilization could still be entirely invisible to us, simply because its outermost settled systems haven’t reached Earth yet. We’re looking out from a quiet spot on a timeline where the galactic takeover is still in progress.
This timing explanation flips the usual interpretation of the Fermi Paradox on its head. Instead of asking why no one has arrived, the Grabby hypothesis asks why we don’t see the evidence of their expansion. The answer is that we’re early. Humans have only been broadcasting radio signals for about a century. On cosmic timescales, that’s the blink of an eye. If Grabby civilizations tend to emerge around the same time that ours did—a likely scenario if life follows a similar evolutionary timeline on many planets—then their expansion fronts are still far away. They haven’t reached us yet, and we haven’t built telescopes sensitive enough to see the ancient glow of their infrastructure on the other side of the galaxy.
What would a Grabby civilization actually look like from a distance? Not like a fleet of starships or a glowing network of cities. More likely, we’d see large-scale astrophysical disturbances: stars being dismantled for energy, planetary surfaces converted into computing substrates, and a massive infrared glow from waste heat. The paper’s authors estimate that if such civilizations have been expanding for a few million years, we should already be able to detect their signature in wide-field infrared surveys. The fact that we don’t see those signatures strongly suggests that either there are very few such civilizations, or they began their expansions very recently—meaning their leading edges are still far beyond our current observational limits.
There’s a second, more uncomfortable layer to the timing explanation. The Fermi Paradox asks where everyone is. The Grabby hypothesis adds: when are they coming? If the galaxy is currently quiet because expansion has only just begun in a few distant sectors, then the Great Silence isn’t permanent. It’s a temporal bubble. Within the next few million years—a blink on the geological clock but an eternity for civilization—Earth could find itself on the front lines of an ongoing cosmic land grab. We wouldn’t be invaded by aliens who want our water or our culture. We’d simply be absorbed into a region already claimed by an expanding intelligence that sees entire star systems as raw material.
For now, deep space remains empty to our instruments. No megastructures. No beacons. No answer to the whisper of silence. The Grabby aliens theory doesn’t prove that we’re doomed or that we’re special. It simply suggests that the universe is still in its settlement phase, and we’re camped out in a quiet corner where the noise hasn’t reached yet. The Fermi Paradox might not be a paradox after all. It might just be a timing problem. And if Grabby aliens are real, the most dangerous words in the cosmos aren’t “we are alone.” They’re “not yet.”
