They look like farm equipment sheds or grain silos if you’re not paying attention. But inside those concrete and steel capsules, a 1960s-era Minuteman III intercontinental ballistic missile sits upright, fueled, and ready to fly at a moment’s notice. The launch sites—the silos themselves—are the quiet backbone of America’s nuclear deterrent. Today, they’re still active. And at Vandenberg Space Force Base on the California coast, the same system gets tested regularly under the callsign “Polar Express.” Here’s how these underground machines work, how they’re tested, and why a 50-year-old launch site design still matters in 2025.

The Minuteman III first went on alert in 1970. That means the current silo infrastructure is older than most of the people reading this. Each missile lives in a hardened launch facility—basically a steel tube sunk 80 feet into the earth with a 110-ton concrete lid on top. The silo is designed to survive a nearby nuclear blast. The electronics inside have been upgraded multiple times, but the launch site itself hasn’t changed much. It’s a standalone bunker with its own power, air filtration, and shock absorbers. When the launch command comes from the Pentagon or from an airborne command post, the crew in a remote launch control center pulls a key and turns it. That signal blows the silo door off with explosive charges, and the missile punches through a thin foam cover. Within 30 seconds, the Minuteman is clearing the earth and heading for the stratosphere.

But you don’t just trust a 50-year-old launch site to work in a real war without proving it. That’s where Vandenberg comes in. The 576th Flight Test Squadron at Vandenberg runs the Polar Express tests—unarmed Minuteman III missiles launched from converted silos on the base itself. These aren’t the same underground tubes you’d find in Montana. Vandenberg’s launch facilities are test silos, built to simulate operational conditions, but they’re open to the public via remote cameras during test launches. The procedure is identical to a combat launch: crew unlocks, key turns, door blows, missile fires. The test missile travels 4,500 miles down the Western Test Range toward a target zone near Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The whole flight lasts about 30 minutes. The warhead is a dummy, but the flight profile is real. These tests verify that the guidance systems, reentry vehicles, and silo ejection mechanisms still work after decades of sitting in a hole.

Why should you care about holes in the ground that haven’t fired a warhead in anger since the Cold War ended? Because the launch sites are the hardest and most expensive part of the deterrent to replace. The silos themselves cost roughly $15 million each to build in 1970s dollars. Digging new ones today would require environmental impact studies, state approvals, and billions of dollars that the Air Force would rather spend on the new Sentinel ICBM program. Sentinel, the Minuteman’s replacement coming in the 2030s, will use upgraded versions of the same silo infrastructure. The launch sites will stay. The Polar Express tests prove the old tubes can still handle a 78,000-pound missile slamming out of them at four Gs. Even with upgrades to command and control electronics, the concrete and steel are still good.

There’s a practical edge to all this that American men in their twenties should respect. These launch sites are maintained by three-star generals who know that any delay in testing is a delay in proving survival. On any given week, you can drive past a Minuteman silo in rural Colorado and never know it’s there. The sites are guarded by unarmed security forces who take their jobs dead seriously. The launch control centers are staffed by missileers—young officers and NCOs—who spend 24-hour shifts in a buried capsule with a pistol and a nuclear launch code sealed in a safe. It’s not glamorous. It’s not Star Wars. It’s a 1960s design that still works because it was built to survive.
