For anyone paying even casual attention to spaceflight over the last decade, the numbers have become almost absurd. In 2023, SpaceX launched 96 orbital rockets. The rest of the world combined, including every national space agency and every other private company, launched roughly 130. That means SpaceX alone accounted for about 42 percent of all orbital launches on Earth. By early 2024, they were averaging a launch every 2.8 days. No government agency on the planet—NASA, Roscosmos, CNSA, ESA, JAXA, ISRO—has ever operated at that tempo. The gap isn’t just wide. It’s structural. And it has fundamentally changed what “space access” means.

To understand how we got here, you have to look at the old way of doing things. For decades, national space agencies built rockets like they built aircraft carriers. Each launch was a major national event, planned years in advance, cost-plus contracts ensuring that delays and overruns were passed to taxpayers. NASA’s Space Launch System, or SLS, is the perfect example. First conceived in 2011, it finally launched its first mission in late 2022. That’s eleven years and roughly $23 billion for a rocket that will fly, at best, once a year. Each SLS launch costs around $4 billion. Compare that to a Falcon Heavy, which costs roughly $90 million per launch and can fly several times a year. The difference isn’t incremental. It’s a complete paradigm shift.

The reason SpaceX can launch so often comes down to two things that agencies either ignored or couldn’t implement: vertical integration and reusability. Every SpaceX rocket is built, tested, and launched by the same team in the same facilities. When an issue popped up on a Falcon 9, engineers could trace it back to the factory floor in hours, not months. Agencies like NASA and ESA, by contrast, subcontract engines to one company, avionics to another, structural components to a third, and then spend years integrating them. That model works for one-off flagship missions, but it’s a nightmare for cadence.

Reusability is the real game changer. When the Falcon 9 first started landing boosters, a lot of people dismissed it as a gimmick. Now those boosters are flying ten, fifteen, even twenty times before retirement. The cost savings are obvious, but the cadence advantage is even bigger. Because the rocket hardware is reused, SpaceX doesn’t have to wait for a new booster to be built from scratch every time they want to launch. They just recover one, refurbish it, and slot it back into the manifest. Agencies like Roscosmos and CNSA have looked at reusability, but their budgets and political structures make full adoption nearly impossible. Roscosmos relies on expendable Soyuz rockets that have barely changed since the 1960s. CNSA’s Long March family is getting better, but they still launch on a schedule measured in weeks, not days.

The numbers tell the story. In 2023, SpaceX launched more orbital missions than Russia has in any single year since the collapse of the Soviet Union. They launched almost as many as China did in the entire decade between 2010 and 2020. India’s space agency, ISRO, which is often praised for its efficiency, launches about six to eight times a year. SpaceX does that in a week. Even Europe’s Arianespace, once a dominant commercial launcher, is struggling to stay relevant. Their Ariane 6 rocket has been delayed for years, and during that gap, SpaceX has absorbed nearly all of the commercial launch market. The only agency that still competes on price is Roscosmos, and that’s only because of state subsidies that have no basis in actual manufacturing efficiency.

Now, this isn’t meant to trash agencies. NASA does incredible science, and the James Webb Space Telescope or the Perseverance rover are achievements that SpaceX has never attempted. But when it comes to simply getting things off the ground, the agency model is obsolete. The bureaucratic layers, the congressional oversight, the political string-pulling, and the insistence on bespoke, non-reusable hardware means they will never match a private company that treats launches like a production line. SpaceX can afford to fail a few times a year because they have fifty more launches lined up. For an agency, a single launch failure can set back an entire program by years.

What does this mean for the future? It means that for the next decade, if you want to put something in orbit cheaply and quickly, you go to SpaceX. Agencies will still build the deep-space probes and the crew capsules for national pride and scientific discovery, but the heavy lifting of routine access to space is now a private industry game. Starlink is the clearest example. SpaceX is launching its own internet satellites at a pace that makes every government-run constellation look like a hobby project. They are using their own rockets to build their own network, and it’s working because they control the entire pipeline.

The takeaway is straightforward. Agencies built the foundation, but they were never designed for speed. SpaceX was. And the launch cadence gap is not a temporary spike. It is the new baseline. For anyone watching the future of space travel, the only question left is how long it takes for the rest of the world to admit that the old model is dead.
