The Mercury 13 and the medical testing
In 1960, Dr. William Randolph Lovelace II—the same guy who designed the physical and psychological screenings for NASA’s male astronauts—got curious. If the ideal astronaut was small, light, and resilient, why not test women? Women tend to be lighter, require less oxygen, and have lower rates of heart attack. Lovelace wasn’t a feminist crusader; he was a scientist who wanted data. So he privately recruited a group of women pilots, many of them record-holding aviators, to undergo the same battery of tests that the Mercury men had survived.
The testing was brutal. It wasn’t a checkup; it was a crucible. The women were subjected to isolation tanks, where they floated in total darkness and silence for hours to test psychological stability. They rode the tilt table—a bed that slowly rotates you upright while you’re strapped down, to measure how your blood pressure handles G-forces. They drank radioactive water to track fluid shifts, had ice water shot into their ears to trigger vertigo, and endured invasive colonoscopies and spinal taps. No painkillers. No complaints allowed.
What the results showed was unambiguous: women were not just capable—they were sometimes superior. One candidate, Jerrie Cobb, scored in the top two percent of all astronaut candidates on psychological and stress tests. Another, Wally Funk—who would later fly with Jeff Bezos on Blue Origin in 2021 at age 82—passed every test, including the isolation chamber, where she lasted longer than any male candidate. The data suggested that women, on average, had better cardiovascular efficiency and lower metabolic rates. In the lean, cramped quarters of a Mercury capsule, a smaller astronaut meant more room for life support and instruments. It was pure engineering logic.
But logic doesn’t run government programs. In 1961, Lovelace sent the women to Pensacola, Florida, for the final phase of testing: military flight simulator time. The Navy pulled the plug before they could begin. Lovelace had no official NASA contract; his program was a private side project. The Navy refused to let women use its equipment. Then, in 1962, NASA’s director of space flight told Congress that women could not be astronauts because they lacked “military jet test pilot experience.” A circular catch-22: women weren’t allowed to fly jets in the military, so they couldn’t get the very experience NASA demanded. Never mind that they had already proven themselves in the medical tests.
The Mercury 13 never launched. They were sent back to civilian life, largely forgotten until books and documentaries resurrected their story in the 1990s and 2000s. But their medical legacy matters. The tests they endured helped establish baseline data for human tolerance of acceleration, isolation, and fluid redistribution in zero-G. That data wasn’t gendered; it was human. It showed that the idealized astronaut—small, efficient, psychologically tough—could look a lot like a woman. The Mercury 13 proved that our assumptions about who belongs in space had nothing to do with biology and everything to do with bias.
For the casual space fan, the takeaway is this: the future of human spaceflight doesn’t belong to any one gender. The next time you watch a Starship launch or a crewed mission to the Moon, remember that the blueprint for who can survive those G-forces and that isolation was written partly by women in a cold hospital room in 1960. They didn’t get to space. But they made the case that space is for humans—all of them. The rocket doesn’t care about your chromosomes. It just cares if you can handle the ride.
