Yuri Gagarin's launch pad still operational
Located in the middle of the Kazakh steppe, Baikonur is the world’s first and largest spaceport. The Soviet Union built it in the 1950s, and they picked this spot for strategic reasons—it’s far from borders, gives good ascent trajectories, and sits at a latitude that works for reaching the International Space Station. Gagarin’s Start, formally called Launch Pad 1/5, was completed in 1957. It fired the R-7 rocket on its maiden flight that same year, and it has been launching variants of that same basic R-7 design ever since. The R-7 evolved into the Soyuz rocket, and that’s exactly what still lifts off today.
So why is a pad from the 1950s still running? Simple: it works, and it’s built for the job. The R-7 family of rockets is uniquely suited to Baikonur’s open landscape. The pad uses a massive flame trench, a steel launch table, and four supporting truss towers that hold the rocket upright during fueling. When the engines ignite, the whole vehicle lifts free of the towers, and the pad absorbs the heat and vibration without issue. There is no launch umbilical tower like you see at Cape Canaveral. The Russians designed it to be minimal, durable, and easily maintained. And maintained it has been. Over the decades, engineers have replaced the launch table, upgraded the fueling systems, and reinforced the structure. But the concrete pit and the basic layout are original.
For American space fans used to watching Falcon 9 land on autonomous drone ships or Delta IV Heavy boosters flame out over the Pacific, Gagarin’s Start feels like something from another era. It’s not flashy. There are no escape systems, no air-conditioned crew access arms with glass elevators. When crews board the Soyuz, they walk across a gantry that looks like a fire escape, and they climb in through the side hatch. The whole experience is utilitarian, almost brutal. But it’s also incredibly reliable. The R-7 family has flown over 1,900 missions, and Gagarin’s Start alone has launched hundreds of them. That kind of track record keeps the pad in service because there is no better way to verify a launch system than decades of real hardware data.
You might ask: why not just build a new pad? The Russians did build a second one at Baikonur, Site 31/6, which also supports Soyuz launches. But Gagarin’s Start remains the primary crewed launch pad for Roscosmos. It has the necessary infrastructure for crewed missions, and moving the entire ground support system to a new location would be expensive and disruptive. More importantly, the pad’s location on the steppe is ideal. There are no nearby population centers to worry about, no urban sprawl to restrict launch windows. It sits in the middle of nowhere, which is exactly where you want a rocket to light its engines.
For the next few years, Gagarin’s Start will keep launching Soyuz MS spacecraft carrying crew and cargo to the ISS. The Russians have also been leasing Baikonur from Kazakhstan, and that arrangement is stable. There have been rumors for years that Russia might move all Soyuz launches to their new Vostochny Cosmodrome in the Russian Far East, but so far, Vostochny has only handled a handful of commercial launches. Gagarin’s Start is still the workhorse. The pad underwent a major overhaul in 2019 to upgrade its fueling lines and computer systems, and it passed inspections. It’s not going anywhere soon.
If you ever get the chance to watch a Soyuz launch from Baikonur, you’ll see the rocket sitting on that pad for two days before launch, standing in the open steppe under the sun and wind and dust. And when the countdown hits zero, the four boosters ignite, the core engine burns, and the whole structure shakes. That pad has been shaking like that for sixty years. It launched the first man, the first woman, the first space stations, and now it supports the last American rides to orbit before Commercial Crew took over. It is the longest continuously active launch pad on Earth. That isn’t nostalgia. That is engineering endurance.
So next time you see a Soyuz launch on a stream, look at the background. That flat, dry, desolate landscape with the lonely gantry is the same one Gagarin saw. And it’s still sending people to space. That’s not history. That’s what operational means.
