Soyuz the reliable workhorse of history
Let’s get one thing straight: Soyuz is not glamorous. It’s not carbon fiber. It doesn’t land on its tail. It’s a kerosene-burning, open-cycle brute that was designed with slide rules and Soviet pragmatism. The RD-107 and RD-108 engines that power the boosters and core stage are essentially 1950s technology. But that clunky, battle-tested design is exactly why Soyuz commands a 98 percent success rate across more than 1,700 launches. To put that in perspective, the Space Shuttle had a 98.5 percent success rate, but it only flew 135 times. Soyuz flies about 20 times per year. Reliability at scale is the name of the game.
The secret to Soyuz’s longevity isn’t cleverness; it’s simplicity. The rocket uses a centralized fuel-feed system, hypergolic (self-igniting) propellants in its upper stage, and a single gimbaled engine on each booster. There’s no hydrogen, no fancy turbo-pump pre-burners, no complex staging. The boosters are literally strapped to the core with simple metal cross-beams. When they burn out, they separate by pulling away from the core in a distinctive “Korolev Cross” pattern—four boosters diverging outward like a crucifix. It looks like a malfunction. It’s not. It’s just Russian engineering that works.
For American men in their 20s who grew up watching SpaceX land Falcon 9s on drone ships, Soyuz might seem like a relic. And it is. But here’s the thing: while Falcon 9 has been grounded twice in the last decade due to launch anomalies, Soyuz has kept flying through revolutions, economic collapses, and even a global pandemic. In 2021, when a European Vega rocket failed and a Russian Proton rocket had a string of failures, Soyuz was the only heavy-lift launcher that kept delivering NASA astronauts to the International Space Station. That’s not nostalgia; that’s operational dominance.
Soyuz’s role has shifted over the decades. It started as the rocket that launched Sputnik’s successors and the first humans into space. Later, it became the backbone of the Soviet space station program. After the Shuttle retired in 2011, Soyuz became the only vehicle capable of ferrying crews to the ISS. That monopoly lasted until 2020, when SpaceX finally put American astronauts back in American rockets. But even today, Soyuz still flies about half of all crewed missions to the ISS. Why? Because it’s cheap ($80 million per seat—less than a Crew Dragon), it’s available, and it works.
The rocket’s design is also surprisingly adaptable. You can launch it from Baikonur in Kazakhstan, from Plesetsk in Russia, or from Kourou in French Guiana. It can lift satellites, cargo, or people. The same basic architecture—four boosters, one core, one upper stage—has been tweaked into Soyuz-2.1a, Soyuz-2.1b, and Soyuz-ST variants. The engine upgrades are real; the latest version uses digital flight control systems and composite materials. But the guts are the same. The real genius is that Roscosmos (the Russian space agency) never tried to reinvent the wheel. They just kept polishing it.
Some critics point out that Soyuz can’t compete with reusable rockets on cost per kilogram. That’s fair. A Falcon 9 can launch a ton of payload for about $2,700. Soyuz launches cost about $5,000 per kilogram. But here’s the catch: Soyuz doesn’t need to be reused to be economical. It’s built from cheap, mass-produced components. And unlike Falcon 9, it doesn’t need a drone ship, a recovery fleet, or a refurbishment hangar. You light it, it flies, you forget it. For missions where reliability trumps marginal cost—like sending a lifeboat crew to the ISS—Soyuz is still the gold standard.
What does the future hold? Roscosmos is betting on the new Soyuz-5 rocket, which will replace the Proton and potentially the old Soyuz-2. But don’t expect the classic Soyuz silhouette to vanish. The rocket is so deeply baked into Russian infrastructure that it will probably launch cargo and backup crew missions well into the 2030s. Meanwhile, private companies like Boeing and SpaceX have pushed Soyuz out of the commercial crew market in the U.S., but it remains the workhorse for Russia, Europe, and a handful of other nations. It’s also the only game in town if you want to send a tourist to the ISS for a quick weekend trip—ask the Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa, who flew on a Soyuz in 2021 for a reported $80 million.
In a world where space startups burn through cash and hype, Soyuz stands as a monument to the ugly, reliable, no-excuses kind of engineering. It’s not the fastest, not the fanciest, and definitely not the prettiest. But when you need to get something into orbit, and you can’t afford to listen to excuses, you call the Soviet steel that still flies. Sixty years later, it hasn’t let anyone down.
