That’s the June fog, and it’s a hard reality for every launch site on California’s central coast.

Vandenberg sits between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Ynez Mountains. In June, the marine layer rolls in like clockwork. Cold ocean water meets warm inland air, and the result is a thick, low cloud deck that can hang over the base for days. This isn’t the kind of mist you can drive through with your high beams on. It’s a blanket of supercooled droplets that reduces visibility to near zero, soaks hardware, and violates every safety rule in the launch handbook. For a polar launch site that handles some of the most sensitive military and commercial payloads in the world, fog isn’t an inconvenience. It’s a showstopper.

Let’s talk about why that matters. Vandenberg is the United States’ premier launch site for polar orbits. When a satellite needs to cross over the poles, it launches south from the California coast so it doesn’t fly over populated land. This is critical for reconnaissance satellites, weather monitoring, and the kind of global communications networks that keep your GPS from lying to you. The “Polar Express” corridor—that invisible highway in the sky—runs straight through Vandenberg. If the fog delays a launch by a day, it doesn’t just push back the schedule. It cascades into a domino effect of missed windows, tanking test schedules, and rebooking tracking stations from Norway to Antarctica.

The technical problem is straightforward. Launch vehicles like the Falcon 9 or Atlas V rely on a clear line of sight for radar tracking and optical cameras during the first critical seconds of flight. Fog blocks that. Even with radar, the risk of ice accumulation on the vehicle or interference with ground systems is enough to make range safety officers hit the hold button. And if you’ve ever tried to fuel a rocket in wet, cold air, you know that condensation can turn sensitive electronics into expensive paperweights. But mission requirements don’t wait for good weather. Polar launches have to hit specific windows to rendezvous with ground stations or avoid solar radiation, and the customer doesn’t care if the fog rolled in. They want their payload on orbit.

The reality is that Vandenberg is still the best site for polar launches despite the June fog. Its isolation over the ocean means you can launch safely without worrying about debris hitting a city. The infrastructure is world-class, and the team there knows how to handle the weather. They have to. There is no backup launch site that can do what Vandenberg does for polar orbits. Cape Canaveral fires east over the Atlantic, which is fine for low-inclination orbits, but it can’t reach the poles without burning too much fuel or flying over land.

So when you see the fog delaying a Falcon 9 launch in June, don’t blame the base or the company. Blame the ocean. Blame the thermal inversion. Then grab a coffee, keep the tab open, and wait.
