The Soyuz spacecraft has been in service since the 1960s. It is reliable, but it is not forgiving. Since 1971, there have been at least two fatal Soyuz missions—Soyuz 1 in 1967 and Soyuz 11 in 1971—and multiple close calls, including the 2018 abort that forced a ballistic reentry. Ballistic reentries are not just terrifying. They can land the capsule hundreds of kilometers from the intended target, sometimes in winter, sometimes in remote forest or mountainous terrain. Even when everything works, landing in the Kazakh steppe can mean waiting hours for recovery crews. In worst-case scenarios, survival for days is the reality.

This is why the wilderness survival course is mandatory for every crew flying on Soyuz. It is run by the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center near Star City, Russia, and it is not a simulation you can quit. For three to five days, astronauts are dropped into a remote, often snow-covered location with minimal gear—a knife, matches, a survival kit no bigger than a small backpack, and the clothes on their backs. They build shelters from pine boughs, start fires with damp wood, melt snow for drinking water, and signal passing aircraft. There is no room for ego. NASA astronauts, European Space Agency veterans, and experienced cosmonauts all sleep under the same improvised tarps.

The grind here is mental as much as physical. Hypothermia sets in fast when temperatures drop below freezing and you’re wet. Frostbite is a real threat to fingers trying to work a flint striker. Dehydration is a silent killer if you don’t find a water source or melt snow efficiently. And above all, there is the cold. Russian winters are not like American winters. They are deep, dry, and unforgiving. The course is designed to break you down so that you understand what it means to prioritize your survival actions. Find shelter first. Then fire. Then water. Then signal. If you lock up and panic, you die. The training forces that order into your muscle memory.

But the survival training is not just about the environment. It is about the team. On a Soyuz, there are three crew members. If one of them freezes because they didn’t put on their survival gear properly, the whole mission fails. If the commander makes a bad decision about where to set up shelter, the crew doesn’t make it. So the course is a crucible for leadership and trust. You learn who can keep a clear head when your fingers are going numb and the wind is howling. You learn who can take orders and who needs to give them. Those dynamics do not change once you’re in orbit. The survival course is a stress test for the human element that no computer can replicate.

This might sound like a relic of Cold War spaceflight, but it remains critical today. Commercial crew programs like SpaceX’s Crew Dragon and Boeing’s Starliner have their own survival protocols, but for anyone flying to the International Space Station on a Soyuz—and Russia still launches crews regularly—the training is non-negotiable. Even as private spaceflight expands, the hard truth is that any capsule landing in remote terrain demands the same basic human skills: staying warm, staying hydrated, staying alive until someone finds you.

The survival course also teaches you something about what space travel really is. It is not a luxury cruise. It is a controlled risk. Every launch is a bet against physics, and every landing is a roll of the dice against terrain and weather. The astronauts who walk away from a Soyuz landing with a thumbs-up are the same people who spent four days shivering under a poncho in a frozen forest, learning that the difference between life and death is often a dry match and a clear head.
